Anyone need a shortstop?
My longtime softball team is no more. No longer will I make my weekly trips, as I had for the past eight spring/summers, to West Nile Riverside Park to play in the dirt, fall victim to the 10-run rule and be devoured by mosquitos.
Because of this, I am officially a free agent, offering my services to a slo-pitch softball team in need of a shortstop. Or second baseman. Or centerfielder. Or whatever… it doesn’t matter where I play.
Well, I guess it does matter a little bit. I don’t want to pitch, and I don’t want to be catcher (cue joke from Your Neighbor in 3… 2… ). I actually enjoy playing in the field. Because I’m a sucky hitter (yes, even in slo-pitch softball), I need to play in the field to actually feel like I’m contributing to the team’s well-being.
My preference is shortstop of course, but I understand the massive ego involved in being shortstop. Your current shortstop might not want to abdicate for a stranger. So I’ll play most anywhere. Even right field, where I can showcase my Clemente-like arm.
Anyone?

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot happened to the Paperboys?!
NOW who will I get to very hesitantly allow me to fill in on occasion just so they have enough players to field a team?! This is all so disturbing.
Hey, teams out there, I’ll catch… I won’t pitch, but I will catch…
>sigh

Dude, I would love to play on a team this summer, but I don’t even know where to begin. Any tips? What about a blogger team of Springfield bloggers? Any takers?

Damn. Your pre-emptive catcher mention ruined my post.
I’ll make some phone calls for you, Mr. Communist. Perhaps you could join my former softball team. They’re called the Night Bees and play in St. Louis.

That doesn’t look like a glove with eight years of weekly wear and tear…It still has form to it, even. Have you put a call into the Cardinals yet? You could probably get your foot in the door with Ozzie’s blessing.

I think an all-blogger team would be the least athletic team in the entire history of recreational softball.

Bummer dude. Hope you find a team. Just show up with a cooler full of beer, you’ll make friends.

As the person who’s, uh, “managed” the Paperboys for the last few years, it had gotten significantly harder over the last few seasons to field a team from week to week. I won’t lie in saying that didn’t get to be a pain every single Thursday. The main reason for the Paperboys’ dissolution this season, though, was that we apparently blew the deadline to field the entry fee. Although it would have been nice to get an effing reminder from the Springfield Park District …
Either way, since I hadn’t heard back from AC about the matter prior to this post, I just hope there are no hard feelings. Like I said, I’m still down for beer nights.
